Why I Love October…It’s Probably Not What You Think

I love October. I do. It’s not why you might think. It’s not because of Halloween. Honestly, I am not into Halloween much at all. But I do love October because it means the ushering in of fall.

Fall (or autumn) is one of my favorite seasons. I love when the air gets just slightly cool and I need a light jacket or a sweater, especially in the evenings. I like that I can no longer wear my sandals. And that long pants are a must.

I love the colors. The reds, yellows, and oranges. The falling leaves. Trips to the pumpkin patch. Hayrides, apple picking. Apple cider and maple syrup. Homemade pumpkin cookies (a favorite recipe that I make every fall).

While many people dislike the fall, because they know winter is just around the corner, I enjoy it. The cool air makes it more comfortable for me to take walks after dinner. While I do not like the lack of daylight in the evenings, I have come to appreciate the season for what it has to offer.

I also hold a special fondness for October because that is the month I got married, 25 years ago. Though it rained that day…it was a good one.

I grew up in New York State and have always loved this time of year. But I am so grateful that, despite the fact that I live in Virginia now, I still get to experience the fall (and all four seasons) here.

I don’t take that for granted. I don’t think I would like living in a place where it was only one or two seasons for most of the year. I love each one for what it brings.

Another Reason Why I Love October

October is also the month I start thinking about what I am going to pack in my Operation Christmas Child Box. It is a relief project that is operated by Samaritan’s Purse.

How Operation Christmas Child works is: you pack up a cardboard shoebox (or plastic one) filled with small (allowable) gifts, drop them off to a local collection center and then they are shipped to, in conjunction with local partners, children affected by war, poverty, natural disaster, famine, and disease around the world as well as to children living on Native American reservations in the U.S.

These simple gifts such as toys, pens, paper, socks, stuffed animals, get delivered to the children where they also receive information about Jesus Christ and His love for them.

Our family usually packs up 2 boxes to send. We occasionally include a personal letter (that can be read by translators to the child). It’s just a small way to show love to a child who may be living in a difficult situation.

While we are on the topic of Christmas, that reminds me that now is the best time of year to pick out Christmas Cards. I still love to send out cards each year. I know how much I like to receive them and I am sure others do as well. It is a great reminder, especially to those we don’t see often, that we are thinking of them.

  1. I love October and like you it’s not because of Halloween, I love being able to go home and have hot chocolates, cosy blankets and lighting candles. It feels so warm and homely that I love it.
We always use to donate to a similar Christmas donation scheme called the shoebox appeal in the UK. It’s a fab program and helps out so many children and puts a smile on their faces.

  2. This is my favorite month!! I just love all the “cozy” feels that comes with October. I love Halloween but that’s definitely not 100% why I love October! I loved this post! Thank you for sharing!

  3. October is also my wedding anniversary month! I also love the autumnal colours and the seasonal scented candles, it really kicks off that festive feeling to get you excited for Christmas! X

  4. I love October, too. And my favorite place to be during October is one of your favorite places: The Outer Banks. I’m headed there tomorrow and can’t wait to walk on the beach with a chunky sweater and a warm mug of coffee. It just doesn’t get any better than being at the beach in the Fall!
