Destination: Pulaski, NY – Why I Went & What I Did

As some of you may know, I am from Upstate NY. More specifically, Central New York. Most of my family still lives in that general area and I tend to take a trip or two up that way each year. ( I live in Virginia.)

Last weekend, my husband, son and I took a trip up to visit my family and get in a few days of fishing and R&R. We stopped and stayed at a hotel nearby where our friends have a camp. Destination: Pulaski, NY.

While I am not a fisherman at all, my husband and son are super into fishing. If that is you…then you will really love Pulaski, NY. It sits at the shore of Lake Ontario, (one of the Great Lakes). There is great fishing on the lake as well as in the other numerous waterways near by. In fact, they are known as the Salmon Fishing Capital of New York.

I won’t go into the fishing aspect much more, but if that is something you enjoy, I highly recommend Central and Western New York State for a multitude of waterways.

Because Pulaski is a small fishing town and doesn’t boast much in the way of shopping or entertainment, they have limited options for lodging. We found the best hotel in the area…a Super 8 Hotel. Yeah, so the hotel is very basic and shows little to no luxury. They do have decent rooms and I must say a very comfy bed! The hotel has a fridge, microwave and coffee maker in room which is very convenient. Other than a couple locally owned motels, the Super 8 is the best option in my opinion.

As I mentioned earlier, a friend of ours has a camp site at an RV/Camp Resort just outside of town called Brennen Beach. It is a very large RV/Campsite that has over 1200 sites, and a ton of amenities, such as: Beaches, Pools, Rec Hall, Basketball Courts, Playground, Game Room, Restaurants on Site, General Store, Live Entertainment, Activities for the Kids, Nature and Hiking Trails and so much more. But one of the best amenities is the sunset in the evenings, right over the water.

When the guys were out charter fishing, we ladies either went to one of the events hosted at the camp, or in to town for a while. When we went into the heart of Pulaski, we decided to get lunch and so we stopped at Artie’s Hometown Diner.

They had a somewhat traditional diner menu. Such as sandwiches, burgers, breakfast and the like. The food was good and definitely worth the stop.

After lunch we walked across the street to stop at a thrift shop and then a new unique upscale, resale shop called The Flashy Flamingo. This store is very nicely decorated and the items for sale are pleasingly arranged. We loved it. They sell some new and some pre-owned items that are top quality. They also offer products from local artisans such as handmade goat’s milk soaps, lotions and the like from a company called Clucked Out Farm.

We then ventured to another local shop called Colassal Cheese and Colassal Ice Cream. Though we didn’t stop at the ice cream shop, (the locals say it is the best place to get a scoop or two) we did stop at the Cheese Shop. They offer more than just cheeses mind you. In the store they also sell local honey and maple syrup as well as a few decor/souvenir items, candies, meats and more. If you want to sample their famous, high quality cheeses, you can shop their online store.

All in all we had a good time in Pulaski. We visited with family and friends, fished, ate, shopped and spent the evenings around the fire.

If you are ever up that way for a fishing trip, to visit family or friends or just passing through, I hope you will stop for a little while to enjoy the local offerings.
