Christmas Music
When you think of Christmas do you think of Christmas music? I sure do. There are so many beautiful Christmas songs that I just love.
I love everything from the Classic Christmas Hymns such as O Holy Night, O Come All Ye Faithful, & Do You Hear What I Hear?, to the popular secular Christmas songs that are favorites of mine, like Holly Jolly Christmas, White Christmas, Last Christmas, It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year, and the contemporary Christmas Favorite, All I Want for Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey.
I so enjoy both types of Christmas Music. But there is one song that I feel embodies both qualities of the Classic Christmas Hymns and the Pop Christmas Tunes. That is the song, Mary, Did You Know?
Mary, Did You Know?
The lyrics, to Mary, Did You Know, were written in 1984 by songwriter, Mark Lowrey. It wasn’t until he met up with Buddy Greene, a southern gospel songwriter that music was put to the beautifully penned lyrics. One of Lowrey’s fellow band members, Michael English was the first to record it.
The song has since been covered by numerous artists and performed in various styles.
One thing I love about the song is the lyrics. Lowrey is literally asking Mary, the mother of Jesus, if she knows of all the wonderful things her Son would do one day and what His impact would be on the world? Mary, Did You Know?
It makes me wonder what God revealed to her in advance about her Son’s life. Could she have truly understood at that moment when she was giving birth to her baby, who Jesus really was? The Savior of the World?
This song is a perspective unlike any other I had ever heard. Its lyrics and the swelling melody are enchanting and very moving to me.
There are several versions of this song, but the one I’d like to share is a moving stirring version by CeeLo Green with video excerpts from the movie, The Son of God.

I hope this song blesses you, as it has me.
Merry Christmas!
