Everything Isn’t Terrible: Conquer Your Insecurities, Interrupt Your Anxiety and Finally Calm Down

I had been going to therapy for about 6 months and had been struggling with anxieties for quite some time, my therapist suggested I read the book, Everything Isn’t Terrible: Conquer Your Insecurities, Interrupt Your Anxiety, and Finally Calm Down, by Dr. Kathleen Smith.

I thought, okay, I’ll check it out. A few days later, I ordered the Kindle version of the book and began to read. As I started reading the first few pages, I thought the book wasn’t really relatable to me.

You see, the way the author shares information in part is that she shares some of her client’s real-life experiences (names changed, of course). The first client’s story she shared, was about a woman having issues with a boyfriend. I felt that because I didn’t relate to the story, I wouldn’t get anything out of the book.

But the more I read, the more I realized this book WAS written FOR ME! Honestly, in some of the chapters, it was like the author had been inside my head!

Dr. Smith interjects humor and stories from her actual clients which I found to be unique and engaging. She then shares insights into how we can truly identify the sources of our anxiety and she shows us to find ways to take control of it and ultimately have a sense of calm as we go about life. She gives the reader tools and tips to use in very practical ways.

For many of us, some of our anxiety can be caused by the delicate dance we share within our relationships, such as our families, significant others, co-workers, bosses, or even perfect strangers. She gives examples of how those relationships can get us into a perpetual state of anxiety.

She then helps us identify the behaviors and thought patterns we have that contribute to the problem. Dr. Smith also reveals how to reframe many of those thoughts and behaviors to help free us from that cycle.

How does she do that? At the end of each chapter of Everything Isn’t Terrible, Dr. Smith poses questions that force us to examine our own lives and identify behaviors, thoughts, or feelings that cause us to be anxious and or upset.

She then suggests ways to interrupt or stop those behaviors, thoughts, or feelings and find new ways of dealing with our anxious minds. She offers ways for the reader to put into practice what they have learned thus far, to help them overcome the anxiety they struggle with.

It’s not like any other book I have ever read before on overcoming anxiety. It is smart, funny, and an easy read. Dr. Kathleen Smith shares her knowledge as a practicing licensed therapist and mental health writer with her readers.

In short, this book has changed my perspective on things and it has helped me to become a much calmer, less anxious person. I have been successful in learning to let go of things that are out of my control and in turn my anxiety levels have definitely dropped. I hope you will check this book out and that it will be a useful tool in managing your anxiety!
