Who Do You Think You Are?
When you think about yourself, what do you think? Do you think I am a good person and deserve to be happy? Or do you think I am worthless and don’t deserve love or kindness from anyone? Perhaps your thoughts lie somewhere in the middle of these two statements. What parameters do you use to find your identity?
Did you realize that our environmental, social, spiritual, racial, familial, financial or even our current health status can all be great influencers of how we see ourselves; how we identify ourselves. We may use labels that others put upon us to dictate how we feel about ourselves. We may internalize the negative thoughts, comments or actions towards us to help form our viewpoint of ourselves.
We may go along in life, believing negative things about ourselves and then often times make life choices that cause harm or take us down a destructive path.
But I challenge you to ignore those negative thoughts about yourself. Those negative labels that you or others have put upon you. I challenge you to think about yourself the way that your Creator thinks about you and you will find your true identity. I encourage you to see yourself the way He sees you. The real you. He knows you like no one else.
Your Identity from God’s Perspective
Do you know what God thinks about you? You don’t? You may be surprised to hear this. But He really LOVES you. Yes, YOU! The way you are right now. He doesn’t wait to love you when you think you are good enough and He doesn’t withhold His love from you until you “get your act together”. He loves you just as you are, right this moment. The key to finding your true identity lies in seeing yourself through His eyes.
Let’s dig into this a little deeper. How do I know that God loves you and wants to care for you? Because He has said so repeatedly in His Word (the Bible). Let’s find out what He has to say.
Evidence of God’s Love and Care
Old Testament
- Deuteronomy 31:18 The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
- Psalm 27:10 For my father and my mother have forsaken me, but the Lord will take me in.
- Psalm 139:13 You knit me together in my mother’s womb.
- Psalm 139:14 I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
- Psalm 147:3 He heals the brokenhearted, He binds up their wounds.
- Jeremiah 1:5 Before you were born, I knew you. Before you were born I set you apart.
- Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a HOPE and a FUTURE.
- Isaiah 43:2 When you pass through the waters I will be with you.
- Isaiah 41:10 Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand
New Testament
- Luke 12:27-29 Consider how the wildflowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith! And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it.
- John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son. That whosoever believes in HIm shall not perish but have everlasting LIFE.
- John 10:10-11 The thief does only comes to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that you may have life, and that you may have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.
- John 17:20, 22 My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message.
- 1 Peter 5:6-7 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
- 1John 3:1 See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!
- Ephesians 1:5-6 He predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.
Your True Identity
God views you from His perspective, not yours. He loves and cares for you because He created you and because you are His child. His love for you is totally unconditional. Nothing you can do will make Him love you less.
Claim your true identity in Christ. Instead of negative labels like stupid, crazy, ugly, worthless, unloveable, see yourself through God’s eyes. Say these affirmations aloud to yourself.
- I am a new creation
- I am a child of God
- I am the son (or daughter) of The King of Kings
- I am redeemed
- I am free in Christ
- I am fearfully and wonderfully made
- I have a purpose and a plan designed for my life
- I have gifts to share with the world
- I have love to give to others
- I have peace
- I am loved by God, now and forever
- I will never be forsaken by God
One of the best ways to discovers God’s perspective about you (and your true identity) is to read His word daily. I find that reading and jotting down notes can be very helpful. One way to do that is with a journal or a daily planner.
This Daily Devotional Planner by Studio 71 is wonderful. It has a simple yet elegant look to it. It has devotions, space to jot down thoughts or prayers and a planner. It even comes in a beautiful keepsake box.
Once you recognize that you were created by God to be loved and to live out His purpose for your life, I hope it will help you to realize how special and important you are and that you will find your True Identity.
If you don’t know God through His Son Jesus Christ, I pray that you will seek Him out because He is just waiting for you to open up your heart. He already loves you.
Nice post. I’m a Christian but I won’t say I’m too Christian if you get me😅 but I do know of God’s love at the least for me. Thanks for reinforcing it.
Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment.
I get what you mean. I am glad that you do indeed know God’s love.
Have a fabulous day!
Thank you for posting this. I am a Christian but I need reminders of God’s love daily. I suffer from mental health issues (anxiety and PTSD from my health issues) and I need the assurance that He is with me and will never leave or forsake me. I also have been bullied alot when I was younger and been told I was worthless. But I am who He says I am and I belong to Him.
